South: St George, the Shire and the inner south

A broad region of post-war brick homes, apartment clusters near stations and waterside suburbs.

Southern Sydney covers a wide sweep from the inner south through the St George area to the Sutherland Shire. Much of the housing is post-war brick, with apartments clustered around rail hubs and shopping centres, and a mix of older cottages and recent renovations between them.

What shapes plumbing here

Homes of that era often have original drainage still serving extended houses, and original hot water units that have been replaced more than once. Waterside and beachside suburbs share the corrosion concerns of any coastal area, and hillier parts of the Shire have bushland edges where roots and leaf litter affect drains and gutters. Apartment blocks near stations are mostly strata-managed.

  • Check gutters and downpipes regularly near trees and bushland.
  • Expect extensions built over or near the original drain line.
  • Coastal properties should inspect exposed metal fittings.
