Sydney areas: guides by region and suburb

Nine regions, twenty-one suburb guides, and one plain statement: these pages inform, they do not dispatch.

Sydney is not one place. The same burst pipe plays out differently in a Victorian terrace, a beachside apartment block and a recently built home on a slab, and the useful advice changes with it. This hub groups the guides into nine regions, each with a general picture of its housing and common plumbing considerations, then links to individual suburb guides where they exist.

How to use these guides

Start with your region for the big picture, then read your suburb if it has a page. The suburb guides describe typical housing and typical issues, not the state of any particular property, and they never make claims about local water mains or council works. Suburbs shown as plain text are mentioned for orientation and do not have their own page yet.

Some suburbs sit under a region name that does not match their real position, because web addresses on this site keep the folder layout they already had. Where that happens the page says so. If you want practical help before choosing, the plumbing overview and the emergency guide work for every area.

The nine regions

Central West

Greater Western Sydney's central hub around Parramatta, mixing historic cottages, post-war suburbs and fast-growing apartment districts.

  • Parramatta
  • Westmead
  • Harris Park
  • Granville
  • Merrylands
  • Auburn
  • Lidcombe

Eastern Suburbs

Coastal and near-coastal suburbs with steep streets, salt air and many apartment blocks, alongside older cottages and terraces.

Inner North

Suburbs just across the harbour and along the lower north shore, with apartments, older houses on sloping ground and mature trees.

  • Crows Nest
  • St Leonards
  • Artarmon
  • Lane Cove
  • Willoughby
  • Neutral Bay
  • Kirribilli
  • Mosman

Inner West

Dense, older suburbs of terraces, cottages and Federation homes, where original drainage often sits beneath generations of renovation.

North

Harbour-side and upper north shore areas, from high-density apartments to leafy, larger-lot homes.

North East

The northern beaches, with coastal exposure, hilly terrain and a mix of beachside apartments and family homes.

  • Manly
  • Dee Why
  • Brookvale
  • Mona Vale
  • Narrabeen
  • Freshwater

North West

The Hills district and growing north-west, where larger blocks, pools and newer estates shape the plumbing picture.

South

St George, the Sutherland Shire and the inner south, with post-war homes, apartments and waterside suburbs.

  • Kogarah
  • Hurstville
  • Rockdale
  • Sutherland
  • Cronulla
  • Miranda

Sydney City

The CBD and the dense inner-city neighbourhoods around it, dominated by apartments, strata buildings and heritage terraces.

  • Sydney CBD
  • The Rocks
  • Haymarket
  • Surry Hills
  • Darlinghurst
  • Pyrmont
  • Ultimo

Why local context matters

Housing age, block size, slope, proximity to the coast and the way a building is owned all change what goes wrong and who is responsible for fixing it. A terrace owner and a tower resident can have the same leak and very different next steps. These guides try to prepare you for the right questions, and they do not replace an inspection of your property.

Take a few minutes to read your region and suburb before you need them. You will recognise the issues faster, and you will know whether the first call is to a plumber, a building manager or a landlord.

Where to go next

Services apply everywhere: read about blocked drains, hot water systems and the blog guides. This site is an information resource only and does not take bookings or dispatch plumbers.
