North West: larger blocks and newer estates

Space, pools and recent building: the north-west presents a different plumbing picture from the older inner suburbs.

The North West covers the Hills district and the growing suburbs beyond it. Many homes sit on larger blocks, with gardens, pools and irrigation. Older parts have brick houses from several decades, while newer estates are filled with recently built homes.

What shapes plumbing here

Newer homes frequently sit on concrete slabs, so a leak in a pipe that runs under the slab can be hard to find and slow to show. On larger blocks the drain from house to connection can be long, which gives roots and debris more distance to cause trouble. Pools, outdoor kitchens and irrigation add extra connections to the water supply. Some properties on the fringes of the region are not connected to the same services as the suburbs around them, so check what applies to yours.

  • Watch the water meter with taps off to catch a hidden slab leak early.
  • Know where pool and irrigation lines connect to the supply.
  • Ask what services your particular property is connected to.
