Plumbing in Annandale

Sloping streets of Victorian and Federation terraces, where the plumbing history is written in layers.

Annandale is an inner-west suburb close to Leichhardt, Glebe, Camperdown and Stanmore. It is known for its terraces and cottages from the Victorian and Federation periods, many with rear lanes, and its streets slope toward the bay on its northern side.

Terraces, slopes and shared lines

Terrace living means shared walls, and in many terrace rows the drainage and sometimes the roof water also run in shared or closely adjacent lines. A blockage in one house can therefore show up next door. Sloping streets change how rear yards drain, and stormwater from a higher yard can pool on a lower one. Original kitchens and bathrooms have usually been rebuilt, but the old drain beneath them often has not.

  • Ask neighbours whether a drain run is shared before assuming a blockage is yours.
  • Tight rear access means camera and repair work needs planning in advance.
  • Look at rear yard drainage after heavy rain to see where the water goes.

Annandale shares its character with Petersham and Lewisham to the south-west, while Newtown lies to the south. The Petersham guide and Newtown guide make useful comparisons.
