Castle Hill is a major suburb in Sydney's north-west, in the Hills district, with Baulkham Hills, Cherrybrook, Dural and Glenhaven around it. Its housing is mostly detached, with brick houses from several decades on generous blocks, plus newer townhouses and apartments on infill sites near the centre.
Pools, long runs and original systems
Homes of this type tend to have more of everything outdoors: longer drain runs, more taps, irrigation, and pools with their own plumbing and equipment. Double-storey houses add vertical pipe runs and bathrooms above living areas, which makes leaks more disruptive when they happen. Houses built in earlier decades may still have their original hot water system or one of its first replacements, so planning an upgrade before failure is worthwhile. Established trees can send roots toward older drain lines.
- Find and label the pool equipment isolation valves and the irrigation supply.
- Upstairs bathrooms: check ceilings below for stains after any leak.
- Check the age of the hot water unit and plan for its replacement.

Kellyville, a short drive to the north-west, is dominated by much newer housing, which makes an interesting contrast. Read the Kellyville guide for newer estates and the Concord guide for older roomy blocks closer to the city.
