Plumbing in Bondi

Sea air, steep streets and a lot of apartment living: Bondi puts unusual demands on pipes and fittings.

Bondi is Sydney's best-known beach suburb, on the eastern coast, and the streets fall steeply toward the sand. Its housing leans heavily toward apartments, including many interwar blocks, with older houses and newer developments mixed in. That makes Bondi plumbing as much a question of buildings as of fixtures.

Salt, slope and strata

Coastal air is hard on anything metal and exposed: outdoor taps, gas and hot water unit casings, clamps and fixings. Slope matters too, because homes at the bottom of a hill can see higher water pressure than homes at the top, which stresses hoses and valves. In older apartment blocks, original pipework can be shared across several floors, so a leak can travel, and fixing it often involves neighbours and the owners corporation.

  • Replace flexible hoses on a schedule instead of waiting for them to burst.
  • Look over outdoor fittings and appliance casings for corrosion after windy, salty weather.
  • Report apartment leaks to the building manager promptly, because water travels.

Nearby

Bondi sits near North Bondi, Bondi Junction, Tamarama and Bronte. Maroubra, further south down the coast, shares some of the same coastal conditions, which you can explore in the Maroubra guide.
