Plumbing in Maroubra

A south-eastern beach suburb of brick homes, duplexes and sea-view apartments, all exposed to weather off the ocean.

Maroubra is a large beachside suburb in Sydney's south-east, with a long surf beach and neighbours that include Malabar, Matraville, Pagewood and Kingsford. Inland, streets of interwar and post-war brick homes spread out, with many duplexes and smaller apartment buildings, and larger apartment blocks closer to the beach.

Wind, weather and brick homes

Houses of this era frequently have a long history of repairs: original drains still serving extensions, hot water systems replaced more than once, and bathrooms renovated on top of old pipework. Exposure to the ocean affects outdoor fittings and gas appliance casings, and strong weather tests gutters and downpipes. A downpipe that connects to an underground stormwater line can fill with leaf litter and silt, which shows up as overflowing gutters or damp around the foundations.

  • Clear gutters and check that downpipes discharge away from walls.
  • Look at the age and label of the hot water unit before it fails.
  • Duplex owners should clarify which drain and valve serves which side.
