Plumbing in Abbotsford

A river-edge peninsula where apartment buildings and older homes share steep ground running down to the water.

Abbotsford occupies a peninsula on the Parramatta River in Sydney's inner west, near Chiswick and Five Dock. Its housing includes waterfront apartment buildings of several eras alongside interwar and older houses, and the ground generally falls toward the river on several sides.

Apartments, slope and the river edge

In waterfront apartment buildings, plumbing is mostly a building-wide matter: shared stacks, shared hot water arrangements in some buildings, and strict rules about who may open walls or shut off supply. For houses on the slope, drainage has to travel downhill and often a long way, so poor fall or ageing joints can cause repeated blockages. Homes close to the water may also notice more corrosion on external metal fittings.

  • Apartment owners: confirm who owns the pipe before you call a tradesperson.
  • Houses on slopes: check that gully traps and overflow gullies are clear.
  • Exposed metal fittings near the water should be inspected regularly.
